A Fascinating Blend of History and Science – Highly Recommended! While Ujjain is famous for its beautiful temples, the Jantar Mantar (Vedh Shala) is an absolute must-visit for a completely different experience. Built by Maharaja Jai Singh II, it’s a brilliant testament to ancient Indian astronomy and mathematics. Seeing the massive stone instruments like the Samrat Yantra and understanding how precisely they can still tell the time and track celestial movements just using the sun is mind-blowing. The grounds are clean, well-maintained, and surprisingly peaceful compared to the busier parts of the city. It also sits right by the Shipra River, which offers some nice, scenic views. **A few tips for future visitors:** * **Hire a Guide:** I highly recommend paying for a local guide at the entrance (it's very affordable). Without someone to explain how the different structures work, they just look like interesting concrete shapes. A guide brings the whole place to life. * **Timing:** The entire observatory is outdoors with very little shade. Try to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat. * **Accessibility & Cost:** Entry tickets are incredibly cheap (around ₹10), and the site is quite accessible with parking available. Great for families, history buffs, and anyone looking for a quiet, educational break in Ujjain! Would you like to adjust the tone to make it sound more casual, or add a specific detail about your visit, like how long you spent there?
If you love geography and science, you must visit "The Jantar Mantar". It was the oldest observatory of india. The Jantar Mantar in Ujjain, also popularly known as Vedhshala, is India's oldest functional stone observatory and a cornerstone of ancient Hindu astronomy. Commissioned in 1719 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur while serving as the Governor of Malwa, it was constructed because Ujjain historically served as the prime meridian (Greenwich) of India, where the zero longitude line passed according to ancient Hindu geographers. We live in a great country were such a great philosopher, geographers was lived and this place was a live evidance. Ticket 10 rs per person charges for adult and >5 year children entry free.

Jantar Mantar is one of the observatory located in the city of Ujjain. Ujjain is one of the cities selected by Sawai Jai Singh II to built an observatory. Other 4 cities were Delhi, Jaipur, Mathura and Varanasi. Currently it is known as Government Jiwaji Observatory located near Gau Ghat of Maa Kshipra. I was at the ticket counter at exact 10:00 am but there was no one and the officer posted there arrived at 10:20 am and I got an entry ticket at 10:30 am only. Being a famous historical place, the government officials must pay attention to this.
Beautiful Astronomical site. The show doesn't work well but the information attract students and the idea of entering the huge globe was Awesome. Place needs a lot of maintenance by the govt. Install an audio to explain how the sun dial works not everyone one reads and understand the written text. Maintain the library both audio and physical. Students need more of such places in the city. Authorities please keep the place alive for the generations to come
